Congratulations – you work from home some of the time, or all of the time.  Maybe you work for yourself from home ?

There is no doubt this is something a lot of people would like to try. But just ask anyone who does this regularly and you will find that there are some things from office life that you might miss.

Obvious thing such as perhaps no IT department to speed dial might spring to mind, a shortage of companionship during 9 to 5 ?  Lack of team spirit when you need some motivation or mojo ?

To make your home office as convenient and productive for you as possible, here are some ways to kit out your office so your work style and life and output remain unaffected.

Create A Corporate Office At Home

1: Paint one whole wall in whiteboard paint. Yes, really – an entire wall. Don’t bother with masking tape and border paint to create a small size whiteboard area. Use the entire wall. You can divide it up into areas : to do lists/ actions / brainstorm / ideas / reminders. You could even divide it up by client or project or day of the week.

Once you start using a whiteboard wall, you won’t know how you worked without one.

2: Keep your stationary, paper, paperclips, cables, chargers, pens – all of the things you use daily – close to hand. This will minimise the amount of time you spend on your feet, and maximise your output.  A tallboy with lots of drawers can contain all of this paraphernalia neatly and tidily, without looking like office furniture.

3: Create zones within your space (or on your whiteboard wall ?) to imitate how you work in a traditional office. Consider writing space, brainstorming space and meeting spaces. Your writing space might be at your desk. Your brainstorming space might be on your feet using your whiteboard wall. Your meeting or skype or hangout space might be a comfortable chair in a corner. Or if you prefer stand-up meetings, consider a taller desk or shelf where your laptop or phone can sit with a camera angled at you for sharing screens or being on camera.

Working from home can be mega productive. Less meetings perhaps, less watercooler chats, less downtime overall. But you can – and should – plan your home office space so it fits your work style and your comfort.
